Santander begins re-branding former Abbey and Bradford & Bingley branches

The Spanish banking giant Santander has begun its re-branding scheme that will see all 1,045 branches of the former Abbey and Bradford & Bingley banks bear the parent name Santander.

Abbey was bought by the bank in 2004, which went on to buy both the Bradford & Bingley and the Alliance & Leicester in 2008.

The Alliance & Leicester branches are due to be renamed later on in the year.

The change will push the Santander brand up to the fifth largest bank accounts provider in the UK, with 25 million savings account holders and borrowers.

The re-branding process will cost the bank £15m, starting with 300 Abbey and Bradford & Bingley branches in the south-east, followed by the remaining branches later this month.

As well as re-branding the branches themselves, around 9,500 staff have been issued with new uniforms, as well as 971 cash machines being branded with the new name, 27 company internet sites and thousands of separate items of stationary.

Alison Brittain, a Santander executive, said that now was a good time to have a new name on the High Street.

“The Santander brand is untarnished during the credit crisis, it is very strong and secure,” she said.

“We operate as a challenger on the UK High Street and, having 1,300 branches, it is going to be great.”

One advantage for holidaymakers travelling to Spain is that the bank’s UK customers can now also use Santander cash machines in Spain without paying any fees.

Start placing the corrugated roofing sheets at the downhill end of the roof. Lay the first one so it overhangs the end fascia board by about 50mm, with one long edge butted against the house wall. Drill 3mm clearance holes in the first ridge (above the wallplate) and in every fourth ridge above each of the joists. Slip a sealing ring over each screw, insert it in its clearance hole and drive it into the wood below. Snap on a plastic cover to conceal the screw head.

Lay the next sheet against the house wall, with its downhill end lapping over the sheet you have just fixed by about 300mm, and repeat the fixing process.

Add further sheets as necessary until you reach the uphill end of the roof,where you may need to fit a cut-down length. Let it overlap the fascia board by about 50mm.

To cut across a roofing sheet without cracking it, sandwich it between two long timber offcuts and secure them next to the cutting line with clamps. Then cut the sheet with the saw blade running against the edges of the offcuts.

After fixing the first row of sheets,seal the junction between the house wall and the roof surface with a strip of self-adhesive flashing tape. Apply flashing primer to the wall and allow it to become tacky. Then peel back the release paper from the tape, bed one end against the house wall and let the other lap onto the roof surface.

Unroll the tape, peel off more paper and work your way along the edge of the roof to the other end. Cut the tape to length, then go back and bed the tape down firmly onto the roof surface all the way along.
